Register now for the CESS Annual Conference 2022

CESS Annual Conferences have been held at universities around North America since 2000, with conferences as large as 70 panels and attracting around 300 participants from all over the world.

For CESS 2022, submissions were invited relating to all aspects of humanities and social science scholarship. The geographic domain of Central Eurasia encompasses Central Asia, the Caucasus, Iran, Afghanistan, Tibet, Mongolia, Siberia, Inner Asia, the Black Sea region, the Volga region, and East and Central Europe. Practitioners and scholars in all fields with an interest in this region are encouraged to participate.

In light of likely travel difficulties, papers and panels can be proposed in in-person and online formats. Preference will be given to in-person proposals, as fewer online panels can be accommodated (once accepted, in-person panels can be converted to online format, if travel difficulties interfere). Panels may be proposed in English, Russian or other languages; individual papers must be in English. Preference will be given to pre-formed panels. To connect with colleagues and plan a pre-formed panel, members are encouraged to post in the CESS Facebook Group.

CESS encourages our partner organizations to conceptualize and propose “Sponsored” panels, which will be highlighted in the program. If you are proposing a sponsored panel, please indicate who the sponsoring organization is in the panel abstract.

The CESS Annual Conference in 2022 is being hosted by Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. The conference will run from 1pm on October 20 to 1pm on October 23, 2022 with pre-conference workshops on October 19 (morning and afternoon) and October 20 (morning).

Conference Host: Indiana University

Indiana University is the flagship public university of the state of Indiana. More than 45,000 students enjoy the beautiful campus in Bloomington, a small city in south central Indiana. The host for the Fall 2022 conference is the Inner Asian and Uralic National Resource Center, a center that supports the study of the Central Eurasian region. Founded in 1962, for the last 60 years IAUNRC has played an important role in supporting the Department of Central Eurasian Studies (CEUS, formerly Uralic and Altaic Studies). CEUS is home to faculty specialists on civilizations stretching from the Baltics, Hungary and Turkey to Central Asia, Tibet, and Mongolia. CEUS scholars pursue both historical and contemporary analysis in a wide range of disciplines.

Many of the conference events will take place in the Hamilton-Lugar School for Global and International Studies, home to CEUS and IAUNRC, as well as to East Asian Languages and Cultures, the Russian East European Institute, the Department of International Studies, and other related programs.  Bloomington’s downtown area, in walking distance from campus, is the site of numerous hotels and restaurants. Regularly scheduled shuttles carry visitors on an hour-long drive from the Indianapolis Airport directly to the campus.

Call for Proposals and Proposal Submission

The call for proposals for panels and individual papers is now closed.

Submissions were invited relating to all aspects of humanities and social science scholarship.

The following types of proposals are solicited: individual paper, pre-organized panel, roundtable, thematic discussion, author-critic forum, and book-in-progress panel. Find out more about the requirements of each proposal type.

You do not need to be a member of CESS in order to submit a proposal, but if your proposal is accepted, you must become a member by the presenter registration deadline (see Next Steps).

For panels/roundtables/workshops etc, all the proposal information must be uploaded by all the panelists/participants by the deadline.

Conference Rules and Guidelines

Before submitting a proposal, please read CESS’ conference rules and guidelines.

The primary language of the CESS Annual Conference is English; however, proposals for panels to be conducted primarily in a non-English language are welcome and encouraged. Panel proposals should indicate the planned working language in brackets after the title (e.g. [Uzbek], [Russian], etc.) and submit an abstract in English followed by the abstract in the non-English language. Individual paper proposals can only be accepted if they will be delivered in English. Please read the CESS conference language policy for more information.

Next Steps If Your Proposal Is Accepted

Proposal outcomes will sent by email in June 2022. If your proposal is accepted for inclusion in the conference program, congratulations! Your next steps are:

1. Ensure you are an active CESS member by the registration deadline. This is a requirement for all those who present at the conference. If you are not currently a member, you can (re)join by paying the invoice you were emailed in early 2022 or joining as a new member.

2. Register for the conference by the presenter registration deadline of date TBC in 2022 .

Note: CESS membership and conference registration are two separate processes with two separate fees. Both are mandatory for presenters.

3. If you need a letter of acceptance from CESS, log into Cocoa, then, after confirming your contact details, select the “A” button next to your paper title.

4. Visa invitation letters will be issued by Indiana University once presenters are accepted.

5. If you have any accessibility requirements or scheduling requests, please contact CESS before the presenter registration deadline. We will do our best to accommodate your needs but cannot make a guarantee. Given the size of the conference and the complexity of the timetabling process, we are not able to accommodate any additional scheduling requests received after the presenter registration deadline.

Please contact CESS as soon as possible if you can no longer attend the conference.

Registration

Registration for CESS 2022 presenters is now open. In order to complete registration, you must be a member of CESS for 2022. Non-presenting delegates are welcome to register right up to the start of the conference and non-member registration options will be added soon.

Note: if you need a visa invitation letter, you must be registered and paid-up for the conference before a letter can be issued by Indiana University. Please register as soon as possible to allow time for your letter to be issued.

If your proposal is accepted, you must register by the presenter deadline of September 30, 2022. Any presenters not registered by this date will be removed from the conference program.
